Tom Brokaw

Biography

Tom Brokaw has an extensive history of firsts with prominent world leaders and world events. He conducted the first exclusive one-on-one interview with Mikhail Gorbachev, which won the Alfred I. duPont Award. He was the only anchor on the scene the night the Berlin Wall fell. He was the first American anchor to report on human rights abuses in Tibet and to conduct an exclusive interview with the Dalai Lama. He has anchored Nightly News from the White House lawn, rooftops in Beirut, the Great Wall in China, the streets of Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm, and Soweto in South Africa.

An acclaimed political reporter, he has covered every presidential election since 1968. In addition to Nightly News, Tom Brokaw has anchored, along with Katie Couric, Now With Tom Brokaw and Katie Couric. He has also anchored the Brokaw Reports, a series of periodic prime-time specials that examine some of the crucial problems facing our nation.

He has received numerous awards for his work, including an Emmy for the NBC News special China in Crisis. In 1990, he was the recipient of the National Headliner Award from the National Conference of Christians for advancing the understanding of religion, race, and ethnicity.

Tom began his broadcast-journalism career in 1962 at KMTV in Omaha after graduating from the University of South Dakota with a degree in political science. In 1965, he moved to WSB-TV in Atlanta and specialized in reports that detailed the civil rights movement. In 1966, he moved to Los Angeles and became a featured political reporter and anchor of the late evening news on KNBC-TV. In 1973, Brokaw was named NBC News' White House Correspondent.

He is a member of the board of trustees of his alma mater and the Norton Simon Museum. He has received honorary degrees from numerous universities and is also an advisor to the Asia Society. Brokaw is also the author of the bestselling book The Greatest Generation, his tribute to the generation of Americans who led America during her most pressing crises of this century.
